What holds us back from making space for creativity?

Often we can really want to make things and to be creative but somehow we find it hard to actually do it
It seems like there is something getting in the way, something holding us back

A structured afternoon workshop exploring this theme using creative processes including painting, sketching and collage. An exciting and potentially transformative workshop for anyone who has ever wanted to make more, and yet felt mysteriously held back

Creative Approaches to the Inner Critic - Choose either 24th June or 15th July, 1 - 5pm - £60
The workshop will be held at The Art House
Meeting, Befriending and Transforming your Inner Critics!

A workshop which explores the psychology of what holds us back creatively. For anyone who has wanted to do more painting or drawing or writing and has found it surprisingly hard to get started! A well crafted afternoon which includes drawing, writing and making exercises.

Over 20 years of teaching I've discovered that most of us are plagued by some negative voices/ thought patterns which can hold us back from enjoying our creative efforts

As a young adult I found it impossible to draw or paint anything at all. A part of me was certain that I needing to be perfect, and I was not good enough. It was stifling. My inner critics were very persuasive!

I've learnt to befriend and transform these parts. This workshop will give you the tools to do the same, so that you can become more creative, have more fun making, and become much more kinder to yourself

I hope you will join me to give it a go, in a supportive and inspiring environment, that's also fun! Everyone welcome

During 20 years of teaching workshops one thing kept coming to my attention - that the creative process seemed to often bring up harsh self judgements. Participants would usually appreciate the work of others but dislike their own efforts. Whats more, almost all participants reported being unable to continue with their creative activities outside of a structured session. Once home they never opened their sketchbooks, or paint sets. The common theme was that they would wish to continue exploring their creative journeys but often find they were unable to do so. Something was holding them back, something making them feel stuck. And I recognised this in myself only too well.

Betty Edward's classic book Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain was a big influence on my teaching early on. Her description of the divided brain – one side creative but often silenced or hidden, and the other side dominating, logical, judgemental and interfering but not creative – describes well the idea that we have conflicting parts within us – something I could see in action in the studio – and this developed my approach to teaching as one of learning to hear and be curious about those conflicting voices; exploring the psychological aspects of the creative process.

For most of my 20s i was unable to make anything due to something in me demanding perfectionism. I had a powerful meeting with an inner critical voice while exploring the theme creatively with a small group of friends, and this helped transform my own relationship to my creative image making. Become a Focusing Practitioner has given me additional tools and understanding. I am excited to be able to offer workshops that encourage people to explore these issues and themes with kindness and curiosity.
